Another’s make believe world

I dreamed

I was unworthy,

that my mind was lost.

Criticism became fact,

fiction, a mindless pursuit

as I molded myself;

folding and squeezing

every surplus part of me,

until I was small,

so small,

that I fitted neatly

into another’s box.

The stars above my bed

cast shadows

on the stage,

where I sat

with my back

to the baying audience.

My inner child

was labeled

too childish.

too much,

too loud,

for their adult world.

The room suddenly

as empty

as my mind.

I flinched

as integrity

tried to embrace me,

her touch alien

to my heart.

Yet her kind words

reassured me,

her breath

brushing my skin,

her accepting touch,

tucking a loose strand of hair

behind my ear,

before leading me back to myself.

Waking me up

from my disloyal sleep,

where I had fallen,

inadvertently,

into the depths

of another’s make-believe world.

Leap of Faith

Your dreams filled my mind,

replacing logic

with a desire

to escape from the drudgery

of a dog-eared life.

Unrealistic

perhaps

in its offering.

A one-sided expectation,

to leap into the arms,

of not even a promise.

Abundant willingness,

tethered to the reality of experience;

the scars of my healed past,

rightly lighting my way.

Both of us deaf,

to the pulse and beat of the other.

Judged by tone and geography

rather than the sensory magic

of meeting in the flesh.

The Purchase…

The promises and dreams, sewn into the dress

Were impossible to resist, I have to confess

The purchase of silk, with its taffeta twill

An enhancement required, or the intention to thrill?

The soft touch of the fabric, on the length of my thighs

The warm, sensual hold, of its multiple plies

The cold touch of the zip, from the nape, down my spine

I caressed the pure form, of a mere, hand-stitched shrine

The mirror invited me, to accept its allure

Offering me more, than I could ever endure

Evoking a lust, through its objectification

Subjecting my ego, to its verification

I twirled in the confines, of the falsely lit booth

Justifying its cost, by deluding the truth

Caught up in the drama, of who I could be

Yet I was no more, than the brand I could see

Make this the moment

Courage

Step out from the shadows

Cast by your self-doubt

Throwing open the shutters

You can flood your own drought

By allowing all of your dreams

To see the pure light of day

No umbilical cord of failure

There are no rules to obey

Know that you are always enough

Always where you should be

You do yourself a disservice

If you remain a mute attendee

There is no silver platter

Not one of us is owed

Courage holds the future’s hand

Revealing all we’re bestowed

So make this the moment

When you seize with both hands

The life you’ve always imagined

In vast undiscovered lands
